The Power of Investing in Yourself: Directing Workshops with Jamal Hill
Earlier this month, I've been taking Directing workshops with accomplished Director, Jamal Hill. His training has proven to be a very beneficial investment of my time and money. Learning from Jamal taught me the vital lesson that when it comes to dealing with actors, doing less is frequently more. A major focus of the training has been creating an environment where performers feel free to be themselves and make creative decisions. The material has also helped me to gain a better grasp of narratives and characters, and a single nugget of information may take a production to the next level, and improving oneself is always worthwhile. This experience made me realize how important it is to invest in oneself in the film industry.
During a conversation with Jamal, I mentioned that I was born in Haiti. He revealed that he recently directed "A Haitian Wedding," which is now available on Amazon Prime and stars Jeryl Prescott, Skyh Black, Barton Fitzpatrick, and Bechir Sylvain. Watching the film was a profoundly moving experience for me as it authentically portrayed Haitian culture. The strictness of a father towards their son and the devaluation of a career in the arts resonated with my own struggles and were presented with sensitivity and respect. Additionally, the film showcased the wealth and opulence of Haitian upper-class families, a perspective that is often overlooked.
Overall, I highly recommend taking Directing classes from Jamal Hill for anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in filmmaking. The wealth of knowledge and insight gained from this course has been invaluable, and the experience has allowed me to think bigger while making things simpler.
