Unleashing the Power of Inspiration | PART II
As a filmmaker, I find great inspiration and motivation from some of the top cinematographers in the industry. Roger Deakins has become renowned for his approach to realism, using minimal filters to perfect the image he's trying to create. His work in films such as “Prisoners” and “The Shawshank Redemption” showcase just how much he can do with so little. Yet, his use of color in "Blade Runner 2049" allows him to expand out and produce astonishing visuals. Deakins' ability to mix simplicity and complexity in his cinematography inspires me much.
Equally inspiring is Emmanuel ‘Chivo’ Lubezki and his use of the wide lens to create an intense emotional bond between the character and the audience. His work in “The Revenant” is a great example of this, though he does draw some of his style from Terrence Malick. This blend of styles is something that I truly adore.
Bradford Young is another cinematographer whose work I find very refreshing. The way he shapes his environment using natural light and negative fill is remarkable and is showcased in movies such as “Selma” and “Arrival”. His ability to tell a story and create a mood using light is something that I strive to incorporate in my own work.
Overall, these three cinematographers are just a few of the greats who inspire me as a filmmaker. Through studying and understanding their techniques, I am able to experiment with different approaches to cinematography and continue to grow as a creator.
